How are Arabs and Arab Americans portrayed in media and text today? Usually, several negative portrayals or misconceptions are represented:

  • men wearing turbans
  • women always wearing head scarves
  • terrorists
  • dark features
  • swords
  • barbaric
  • archaic/primitive
  • violent

There are few resources available today that portray Arabs and Arab Americans in an authentic and non-stereotypical light. The six resources listed on the left (three for children, three for teachers) aim to:

  • Disrupt stereotypes about Arabs/Arab Americans, through illustrations and experiences that students can connect to

  • Allow students to learn more about Arab culture

  • Teach about how Arab Americans are a part of our American society today, specifically NYC
